~ Spoils system-people in political power basically gave their friends important political jobs.
-Jackson brought younger people into the system, gave his supporters jobs, called it 'rotation in office', he said it was democratic

-protective tariff; trap set by democrats for republicans (republicans walked right into it)
-John Calhoun wrote the South Carolina Exposition. It called for nullification of the law.
-Jackson said he will send the army to make them pay the tax.

-five civilized tribes; created their own government, and defended property rights. Jackson wanted land for white men.
-forced uprooting of Indians, they were marched west of the Mississippi.
-Jackson refuses to uphold federal law and doesn't listen to the Supreme Court or John Marshall.

-Clay wanted to put the issue against Jackson, but Jackson still defeated him in the election of 1832.

-he was basically handed the Panic or 1837
~Panic of 1837=caused by British banks calling in loans, high speculation, failures of wheat crops

-Americans moved in and they wanted to have slaves, but Santa Anna wouldn't allow it
-The Alamo was a big loss for Americans
-eventually Texas does get its independence but doesn't come into the union because it would come in as a state that came in with slaves.

-candidates =Van Buren, William Henry Harrison
- made William Henry Harrison look like a common person who lived in a log cabin and drank hard cider; wanted him to look like a common man. "Old Tippecanoe" "Tippecanoe and Tyler too"
~Two Party Systems
-Whig Views=national harmony of society and community
-Democratic Views=glorified liberty of the individual
- similar views= commanded loyalty from people, both appealed to everybody.

-Jackson was kind of the cause for the economic depression, he was inhumane to the Indians; champion of the common man.
